Parashat Nitzavim is the 51st weekly Torah portion in the annual Jewish cycle of Torah reading.

Torah Portion: Deuteronomy 29:9-30:20

In Nitzavim (“Standing”), Moses addresses the Israelites, emphasizing the importance of following God’s covenant and of not worshiping other gods. He describes the process of repentance and returning to God, and stresses that God’s commandments are achievable and “not in the heavens.” [1]

As Moses enters the last day of his life, He  addresses them as those who are here today and those who are not here today.  Since all of Israel at the time was there in front of him, it would seem that he is addressing future generations.  Our ancestors made a covenant not just with themselves, but us as well for all generations.  And perhaps as well, he is indeed addressing all of us who will live as Jews, because Torah is timeless.

He exhorts Israel to do the right thing–to keep the covenant and avoid idolatry.  He warns them that they will end up forsaking Hashem and Torah and there will be dire consequences, most notably exile from the Promised Land.  It seems like Moshe Rabbeinu knows his people.

 He also knows we are a strong people.  Yes, there will be those consequences of not following Torah and following idolatry with their attractive emphasis on gratifying lusts through worship, but he also knows that we will ultimately return to Hashem, and Hashem will be waiting anxiously.  And while Israel is in exile, so is Hashem.

We’re all in this together and together we will find redemption.

Al llegar al último día de su vida, Moisés se dirige a los presentes y a los ausentes. Dado que todo Israel en ese momento estaba allí frente a él, parecería que se dirige a las generaciones futuras. Nuestros antepasados ​​hicieron un pacto no solo con ellos mismos, sino también con nosotros para todas las generaciones. Y quizás también, se dirige a todos los que viviremos como judíos, porque la Torá es eterna.

Exhorta a Israel a hacer lo correcto: mantener el pacto y evitar la idolatría. Les advierte que terminarán abandonando a Hashem y la Torá, y que habrá graves consecuencias, especialmente el exilio de la Tierra Prometida. Parece que Moisés Rabbeinu conoce a su pueblo.

También sabe que somos un pueblo fuerte. Sí, habrá consecuencias por no seguir la Torá y seguir la idolatría. Su atractivo énfasis en satisfacer las lujurias mediante la adoración, pero también sabe que finalmente regresaremos a Hashem, y Hashem estará esperando con ansias.
