Parashat Vayera 5787 /

31 October 2026 / 20 Cheshvan 5787

Parashat Vayera is the 4th weekly Torah portion in the annual Jewish cycle of Torah reading.

Torah Portion: Genesis 18:1-22:24

Vayera (“He Appeared”) opens as guests inform Abraham that Sarah will give birth. Despite Abraham’s attempts to convince God otherwise, God destroys the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. Sarah gives birth to Isaac, and Abraham sends away Hagar and Ishmael. At God’s command, Abraham prepares to sacrifice Isaac, but an angel of God tells Abraham to offer a ram instead. [1]

Commentary and Divrei Torah   Sefaria   OU Torah   Rabbi Sacks z”l   Jewish Theological Seminary

In our triennial portion of year two, we have the destruction of Sodom, Gemorrah, Admah and Tziboyim.  Tzoar is destroyed later.  Abraham had argued that these cities should be spared if there are at least ten righteous men among the cities.  Alas, there were none.

The remaining two angels that visited Abraham disguised as “men” now arrive in Sodom in order to rescue Lot and his family, only righteous people there and Abraham relatives. Remember that there were initially three, but after the first completed his mission of informing Abraham and Sarah of the birth of their son, Isaac, his mission is completed and thus no longer needed.

Any doubts we had about this action, we soon see that when the people of Sodom discover the arrival of these unwanted aliens, they converge on Lot’s home to attack them.  Lot, his wife and their two unmarried daughters escape before the deluge.  Unfortunately, while on the run, Lot’s wife turns to see the carnage and slows down and thus gets engulfed by the rain of sulfur.

We also include the reading for Rosh Hashannah.  Abraham and Sara end up in Gerar where once again Sarah is desired by the king.  Upon discovering that she is Abraham’s wife, he makes amends and gives generous gifts to them.  Thus we see how people can repent and thus is appropriate for the start of the season of our own atonement.

Parashat Vayera 5787 /

Sara da a luz a Isaac, y Abraham despide a Agar e Ismael.

Lamentablemente, no había ninguno.
